La transition numérique sur le marché des Mangas

Deux mastodontes de magazines hebdomadaires de manga JUMP et MAGAZINE diffuseront conjointement leurs contenus en ligne. Leurs éditeurs respectifs SHUEISHA (Dragon Ball, Death Note etc.) et KODANSHA (Akira, Astro le petit robot etc.), longtemps considérés comme deux grands rivaux sur le marché national de manga, collaborent pour la première fois. Face à la baisse régulière des ventes de ces dix dernières années, les grandes maisons d’édition prennent le virage numérique.

Les éditeurs acculés face à la chute des ventes

Selon l’institut de recherche des sciences d’édition (shuppan kagaku kenkyujo , Shinjuku , Tokyo), en 2018 les ventes d’ouvrages « papiers » tout confondus ont représenté 1292.1 milliards JPY (env 10.09 milliards EUR). Une baisse de 5.7% comparé à 2017.  Ce n’est plus que la moitié des ventes de 1996, un son sommet jamais retrouvé depuis, car les ventes dégringolent depuis quatorze ans.

Pour les trois titres hebdomadaires de manga JUMP, MAGAZINE et SUNDAY les plus connus du Japon, la Fédération japonaise des magazines estime à 2.88 millions d’exemplaires vendus en moyenne par numéro paru entre octobre 2017 et septembre 2018. Une baisse de 77% par rapport à 1995 lorsqu’à l’époque JUMP à lui seul vendait 6.53 millions d’exemplaire par numéro.  

Quant au marché d’édition de mangas en ligne, il a dépassé le marché traditionnel des mangas en « papier » pour la première fois en 2017. Le premier est evalué à 171.1 milliards JPY (1.33 milliards EUR) contre 166.6 milliards JPY (env 1.3 milliard EUR) pour le second.

Une bombe pour redonner un second souffle au manga

En cause, la diminution de la population, la diversification des hobbies ou un certain désintérêt des jeunes pour les mangas.  SHUEISHA et KODANSHA espèrent stimuler de nouvelles demandes et dynamiser le marché puis compenser les pertes de leurs ventes via la distribution numérique.

Les deux maisons d’éditions réuniront près de 150 mangas des auteurs divers et variés qui contribuent régulièrement dans un site internet unique Shonen Janmaga Gakuen .  A partir de 8 avril jusqu’à 10 juin les contenus des deux maisons d’édition disséminés dans près de cinq magazines différents, aussi bien « on » que « offline » tels que Bessatsu Shonen Magazine et les applications Shonen Jump + et Magazine Pocket, seront progressivement transférés.

Les œuvres connues come ONE PIECE ou SEVEN DEADLY SINS seront mises en avant en priorité à destination des jeunes publics de moins de 22 ans.

L’éditeur en chef du magazine hebdomadaire MAGAZINE (KODANSHA) M. KURITA Hirotoshi affirme avec ambition que les lecteurs auront l’embarras du choix avec des contenus « illimités et gratuits ».
