Les grandes entreprises japonaises lorgnent les start-up chinoises.

TOYOTA et HITACHI vont chacun finaliser leur partenariat avec des startup chinoises. Le premier dans le domaine de l’électronique embarquée et le second dans celui de la fintech. Avant eux, les grandes entreprises occidentales comme AIRBUS avaient déjà identifié leurs cibles dans l’empire du milieu où la création d’entreprises bat son plein notamment dans la fintech. Signe qu’aujourd’hui,  le centre de mondial de l’innovation se déplace des pays industrialisés vers l’Asie et que les entreprises internationales se bousculent pour acquérir le savoir-faire technologique chinois de plus en plus apprécié.

La Chine compte 82 « licornes»

Début avril, TOYOTA a annoncé avoir noué un partenariat avec un incubateur chinois ING DAN spécialisée dans l’IdO (internet des objets) basée à Shenzhen. Une décision qui a du sens puisque celle-ci est intégrée dans un réseau de supply chain riche de 15000 sous-traitants dans une zone devenue l’usine du monde. ING DAN dénichera pour le compte de TOYOTA, des start-up à fort potentiel de croissance et  capables de mettre au point conjointement des objets connectés. Ces objets équiperont à termes les nouveaux modèles de véhicules destinés au marché chinois. L’avantage pour le constructeur nippon est de réduire les coûts de production des modèles réservés au plus grand marché automobile du monde et de profiter de l’efficacité des start-up à fort potentiel de croissance. Un cadre de TOYOTA de conclure qu’« en Chine les nouvelles technologies se développent vite et les start up compétitifs sont de plus en plus nombreux ». 

Shenzen concentre à la fois les start-up qui conçoivent et développent tous types d’objets sur commande et les entreprises qui les produisent rapidement  à bas coût.  Ainsi il est plus intéressant pour le fabricant automobile de sous-traiter par exemple la fabrication d’un capteur à Shenzen que de le développer en interne. Les chinois sortent les prototypes en un temps record avant de les produire à bas prix. Les Américains quant à eux ont choisi la Chine en raison de la faiblesse de leur appareil productif.

Dans l’électronique, l’entreprise KYOCERA ouvrira un bureau de représentation au sein d’un grand campus de start-up soutenu par un fond d’investissement apparenté à la prestigieuse université Tsinghua. Son but est de créer avec des jeunes entreprises locales un centre de développement des pièces électroniques destinées à ses nouveaux produits. Le spécialiste de la génie climatique DAIKIN fait de même en ouvrant un centre de développement des objets connectés qui équiperont les climatiseurs de demain.

Cependant la fintech chinoise reste de loin l’innovation majeure de ces derniers temps. En effet les chinois ont acquis un savoir-faire solide dans ce domaine avec le succès de l’application de paiement ALIPAY devenue l’une des solutions la plus utilisée sur un marché d’un milliard d’individus. En mars l’entreprise HITACHI a organisé en partenariat avec un incubateur chinois XNode , un concours de développement de technologie Block Chain. Les jeunes start-ups et les étudiants locaux sont venus concourir par équipe. Il s’agit d’une deuxième édition d’une série qui a débuté d’abord aux Etats-Unis. L’organisateur du concours, HITACHI retiendra la meilleure idée innovante dans le but de l’appliquer par la suite  à ses nouveaux services. L’équipe gagnante sera invitée à collaborer avec l’entreprise nippone.

La chasse aux jeunes pousses

La fièvre entrepreneuriale a gagné la Chine où créer une entreprise est devenu une façon comme une autre de travailler. La Chine compte plus de 80 « licornes », ces jeunes entreprises qui valent plus d’un milliard de dollars. Elles font de la Chine un grand pays des start-up juste derrière les Etats-Unis et nombreuses d’entre elles se font connaître dans les domaines particulièrement demandés comme l’intelligence artificielle (IA)  ou les applications de covoiturage.

Les entreprises occidentales étaient les premières à collaborer avec les jeunes poussent chinoises bien avant les Japonais.  C’est le cas d’AIRBUS qui a crée en février à Shenzhen un centre de développement des écrans DEL qui équiperont les sièges de ses futurs appareils. L’avionneur européen a choisi de collaborer avec ROYOLE , une jeune entreprise locale devenue célèbre grâce à la mise au point du premier écran DEL pliable au monde en novembre 2018.  INTEL quant à lui travaille depuis 2016 avec le chinois INGDAN pour incuber de jeunes entreprises locales qui développent actuellement les robots dotés de ses semi-conducteurs. Enfin BMW à l’instar de HITACHI pour la fintech, a déniché l’entreprise qui fabriquera les systèmes audio nouvelle génération destinés à ses véhicules en lançant un concours auprès des jeunes entreprises locales.

Un risque politique à long terme

M.Haitao LEI professeur à l’université d’OBIRIN et ancien directeur de TOSHIBA en Chine souligne que « les entreprises japonaises ont tout intérêt à  repenser leur stratégie globale en tenant compte du fait que le centre mondial de l’innovation continuera à se déplacer vers la Chine et l’Asie».

Le gouvernement chinois a voté en mars de nouvelles lois visant à renforcer la protection des propriétés intellectuelles des capitaux étrangers sur son sol. En apparence les autorités encouragent l’investissement des entreprises étrangères et tout semble favorable à leur implantation. Or comme le montre le récent scandale HUAWEI en première ligne des frictions commerciales CHINE-US, la méfiance persiste entre d’un côté les gouvernements , les entreprises nippones et américaine, et de l’autre les partenaires chinois ayant accès au cœur de leurs savoirs technologiques.

Enfin si en Chine les industries de télécommunication et d’automobiles restent protégées, ce n’est pas le cas des start-up encore ouvertes aux capitaux étrangers. Toutefois le parti communiste risque tôt ou tard de  réglementer si les entreprises nippones investissent en masse dans les start-up des technologies de pointe.
